Five laws of Library Science : S. R Ranganathan

These are the well-known laws of Library Science which are given by Dr. S R Ranganathan. The Complete name of Dr. Ranganathan is Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan. He was a librarian and mathematician from India. His most outstanding commitments to the field were his five laws of library science and the advancement of the principal major faceted classification system, the colon classification. He is considered to be the father of library science, documentation, and information science in India and is well known all throughout the remainder of the world for his central reasoning in the field. His birthday is noticed consistently as National Librarian Day in India.

Here below we are mentioning the
Five Laws of Library Science: Implementation for the exam point of view and sharing important bulletins only. Every time the examiner asks these points as options.

The Law of Parsimony

Ranganathan also wrote about what he called "The Law of Parsimony." According to this law, fiscal resources should generally not be allocated to books that have a limited audience.

=================================

By other Individuals Laws

विद्वानों से सम्बंधित डायरेक्ट प्रश्न:

- Every Reader his freedom - James R. Retting (1992)

- Every reader his Library - कोरोमेन + पोकरमेन

- Every writter his contribution to Library - कोरोमेन + पोकरमेन

- Jim Thompson 5 Laws (1992):

      -  Books are the Profit
      -  Every reader his bill
      -  Every Copy its reader
      -  Takes the Cash from the Reader
      -  The Library is a growing Organism

1) In 1998, Michael Gorman, a past president of the American Library Association, recommended the following laws in addition to Ranganathan's five:
  • Libraries serve humanity.
  • Respect all forms by which knowledge is communicated.
  • Use technology intelligently to enhance service.
  • Protect free access to knowledge.
  • Honor the past and create the future.
Gorman repeated these laws in Chapter 1 of his book Future Libraries: Dreams, Madness, & Realities, which was co-written by Walt Crawford, and in Our Singular Strengths: Meditations for Librarians.

*2) In 2004, librarian Alireza Noruzi recommended the application of Ranganathan's laws to the Web:
  • Web resources are for use.                                   (* * * * *)
  • Every user has his or her web resource.
  • Every web resource its user.
  • Save the time of the user.
  • The Web is a growing organism.

3) In 2008, librarian Carol Simpson recommended the following edits to Ranganathan's laws to reflect the richness of media:
  • Media are for use.
  • Every patron his information.
  • Every medium its user.
  • Save the time of the patron.
  • The library is a growing organism.

4) In 2016, Dr. Achala Munigal recommended the following edits to Ranganathan's laws due to the introduction and application of social tools in libraries:
  • Social Media is for use – increasingly in libraries by librarians.
  • Every user his or her Social Tool.
  • Every Social Tool its user.
  • Save time of user by providing information he or she seeks using the social tool he or she is familiar with.
  • Social Media is a growing organism, with various tools and apps being introduced every day. Libraries are not brick and stone anymore. They serve members and non-members alike in terms of non-traditional library service, irrespective of space and time.

5) In 2019, Basheerhamad Shadrach proposed the Five Laws of Knowledge, adapted from those of Ranganathan:
  • Knowledge is for use in all forms.
  • "Every citizen" has the right to access all forms of knowledge.
  • Every knowledge is for access by all without discrimination of any kind.
  • Save the time of all knowledge seekers.
  • A knowledge system evolves with time to achieve all of the above laws.

The Geneva Conventions are a series of international treaties that were first established in 1864. The initial Geneva Convention was formally adopted in 1864 to protect wounded and sick soldiers on the battlefield during armed conflicts. Subsequent Geneva Conventions were enacted in 1906, 1929, and 1949, with additional protocols added in 1977.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was enacted in the United States in the year 1998. The DMCA addresses copyright issues related to digital media and online content, providing a framework for protecting intellectual property in the digital age.

7. Web-scale discovery services for the library environment can more easily connect researchers with the library's vast information repository. This includes locally held and hosted content, such as physical holdings, digital collections, and local institutional repositories. Web-scale discovery services are powerful search and discovery tools used by libraries and academic institutions to provide users with a single search interface to access a wide range of library resources, including books, articles, journals, and other digital content. Popular web-scale discovery services include Ex Libris Primo, EBSCO Discovery Service, and OCLC WorldCat Discovery.

The services you mentioned - Folio, WorldCat Discovery, and Primo - are all examples of web-scale discovery services commonly used by libraries and academic institutions.

8. 2014 OCLC released the WorldCat Discovery Services beta to existing WorldCat Local customers. In 2010, EBSCO introduced its EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) to institutions, which allows searches of a portfolio of journals and magazines. Google Books was launched in 2004. Google Scholar was launched on 20 November 2004.
