In the Library Science courses, many of the terms are used which have their origin in other languages like Greek, Latin, etc. So in this section, we are trying to share the most used terminologies that come from different origins and origin languages. So read the below article section:
Greek Origin Words:
- Bibliography ------------> Biblion
- Catalogue ---------------> Katalogos
- Thesaurus ---------------> Thesauros (a storehouse or treasury or a repository)
~ Peter Mark Roget was the first person to use 'thesaurus' for an English dictionary in 1852

Other Important Key Notes:
- Library from the Latin word is Liber (छाल अथवा वृक्ष का आंतरिक आवरण) (also similar French word ‘Libra’). रोमन व् अन्य भाषाओं में पुस्तकालय के लिए 'bibliotheca' शब्द का उपयोग किया जाता है| इसकी उत्पत्ति Greek भाषा के 'bibliotheca' शब्द से हुई|

- Lexicon - a dictionary of words of a language
- Thesaurus - valuable source of synonyms and antonyms
- Vocabulary - explains and defines words and phrases belonging to a single work of author
- Lexicology - the study of the origin and meaning of words
- Subject encyclopedia are also known as Cyclopaedias.
- Pliny produced the first encyclopaedia 'Historia Naturalis'.
- Paul Scalich used the word 'encyclopaedia' for the first time in his 'Encyclopaedias Seu Orbits Methodical'.
- The first edition of `Encyclopaedia Britannica' appeared in three volumes in Edinburgh in - 1771
- The first edition of `Encyclopaedia Americana' published in - 1829
- Propaedia, Micropaediam, and Macropaeida are parts of "The New Encyclopaedia Britannica".
