Library Famous Terms - Origin of Terms - Languages


            In the Library Science courses, many terms originate from other languages such as Greek and Latin. This section aims to share the most commonly used terminology from various origins and origin languages. Please read the article section below:


Greek Origin Words:

  • Bibliography ------------> Biblion
  • Catalogue ---------------> Katalogos
  • Thesaurus ---------------> Thesauros (a storehouse or treasury or a repository)
    Peter Mark Roget was the first person to use 'thesaurus' for an English dictionary in 1852
  • Encyclopedia ------------> Enkyklopaidia
  • Monograph --------------> Monographia
  • Lexicon -----------------> Lexicon (dictionary)

  • Knowledge --------------> Gnosis
        Philip Bagley was the first person who use 'Metadata' in 1968.

Latin Origin Words:

  • Classification ---------------> Classis
  • Communication ------------> Communicare
  • Lamination -----------------> Laminee
  • Patent ----------------------> Patere (खुला)
  • Dictionary ------------------> Dictionarium
  • Data ------------------------> Datum (जो भी कुछ दिया जाए)
  • Incunabula -----------------> Incunabulum (Place of birth or beginning)
  • Speculative ----------------> Specere (ढूंढ निकालना, खोजना)
  • Social ----------------------> Socius (मित्र, अनुगामी,साथी)
  • Index ----------------------> Indicator
  • Glossary -------------------> Glossarium (a collection of words peculiar to a field of knowledge)
  • Vocabulary --------------> Vocabularium

  • Library -------------------> Liber



Other Important Key Notes:
  • Library from the Latin word is Liber (छाल अथवा वृक्ष का आंतरिक आवरण) (also similar French word ‘Libra’). रोमन व् अन्य भाषाओं में पुस्तकालय के लिए 'bibliotheca' शब्द का उपयोग किया जाता है| इसकी उत्पत्ति Greek भाषा के 'bibliotheca' शब्द से हुई|
  • Glossary - explains the technical terms of a particular dialect or subject
  • Lexicon - a dictionary of words of a language
  • Thesaurus - valuable source of synonyms and antonyms
  • Vocabulary - explains and defines words and phrases belonging to a single work of author
  • Lexicology - the study of the origin and meaning of words
  • Subject encyclopedia are also known as Cyclopaedias.
  • Pliny produced the first encyclopaedia 'Historia Naturalis'.
  • Paul Scalich used the word 'encyclopaedia' for the first time in his 'Encyclopaedias Seu Orbits Methodical'.
  • The first edition of `Encyclopaedia Britannica' appeared in three volumes in Edinburgh in - 1771
  • The first edition of `Encyclopaedia Americana' published in - 1829
  • Propaedia, Micropaediam, and Macropaeida are parts of "The New Encyclopaedia Britannica".
  • Allen Kent - Editor of Encyclopaedia of Library and Information Science.
  • The scope of an encyclopaedia depends upon three criteria Plan, Coverage,  Selection
